Might be best to wait and see what Canon, Epson, and other shortlist vendors plan to do about upgrading their drivers for Catalina. The release of macOS Catalina (10.15) this Fall will obsolete those scanner products that depend on 32-bit code, including scanner drivers and associated vendor bundled scanner software that is not 64-bit. I have owned VueScan Professional since 2012, and do not receive any vendor benefits for mentioning it here. if I were in the market for a scanner, I would also verify that it is supported by VueScan (over 6000 scanner models) without the need for vendor drivers. Scanner vendors tend to have short attention spans for macOS drivers, and the scanners as well which they obsolete on a regular basis. What research have you done on your own so far? Rare photos in 35mm prints, negatives, slides, or larger format variations of these categories? Quantity could be a consideration, and if the cost of a service bureau producing professional scans is less than that of purchasing a higher end scanner with automatic image and artifact correction, the math may speak for itself.
